I was given a challenge to make an art quilt depicting an emotion. At the time, I was feeling very overwhelmed (not even sure I could handle the challenge), so that is the emotion I chose – overwhelmed. A tree in the wind seemed appropriate. When I got through, I showed it to my husband and asked him if he knew what emotion my piece portrayed. He said he saw perseverance. He pointed out that the tree was holding up in the midst of the winds and that a sturdy root system kept it grounded. In my focus on the windblown branches, I had not even noticed the tree’s strength. I had inadvertently created an image of not just the adversity, but the way we survive it. I am lucky to have a good support system. And with their help, I can be strong.
