Ugly Fabric

What do you do with perfectly good stuff that you just don’t like?  You give it to your friends!

Homespun Mandala – 12”x12” – $75

Last month the members of my art quilt group each brought a piece of fabric they thought was ugly.  We put them all in a bag and each of us pulled one out.  The one I got is on the left above.  You may think this is really cute fabric with those fun little houses.  But it doesn’t really work in an art quilt.  And “ugly” (as well as beauty) is in the eye of the beholder.

We had to use at least some of it on the front of our next piece (couldn’t just use it as backing fabric!)  I set my little house fabric on my sewing table for 3 weeks.  No ideas emerged.  In week 4, I decided I needed to cut it up into small pieces.  So, I cut out different configurations of squares.  Suddenly I was inspired.  I found other fabric with similar colors and cut it up, too.  I ended up with the mandala on the right above.  And I like it.  It’s not “ugly” anymore!

There is probably a lesson in there somewhere.  But I’m not feeling quite THAT inspired!

I hope your October is filled with inspiration, transformation and fun.
