There is a blessing/curse that says, “May you live in interesting times.”

This is a “Biscotti Quilt”. Biscotti are cookies that are baked twice. A biscotti quilt gets sewn together twice. One month my art quilt group took on the biscotti quilt as our challenge.
I started by selecting fabric I liked and sewing it into concentric squares to form a large block (image on the left). Then I held my breath and began cutting the block into 3.5”x3.5” squares (it’s scary!) I rearranged the little squares until I found a configuration I liked and sewed all the pieces back together again (image on the right). The result lacks the calm even quality of the initial square. But it is way more interesting.
Sometimes I really wish my life could be calm and even like the first “baking” of the biscotti quilt. But that’s not how life is. All sorts of things converge to cut life into crazy pieces. And so I get to work finding a good way – not the original way – to put the pieces back together. The second “baking” always turns out more interesting.
Here’s to learning to pull the pieces of our lives together in fun and interesting ways!
