Happy 250th Anniversary of our country.

If you’ve ever been snorkeling in tropical seas, you know the incredible beauty that abounds beneath the surface.  Fish of every color, plants and coral, and the varying shades of blue water come together to make a paradise.  It isn’t beautiful because everything is the same.  It is beautiful because they are all so different, swimming side by side. 

In this country’s 250 years, we have a sad history of discounting those who aren’t like us.  We want everyone to be white or Christian or straight or liberal.  But it is the differences that make this country great.  When we get to know people who are different from us, we learn about ourselves, expand our understanding and make friends.  I hope during the next 250 years, we can grow to appreciate the beauty in this country’s diversity.  Maybe we’ll make a paradise above the surface.
