“You can’t always get what you want. But if you try, sometimes, you get what you need.” Mick Jagger

It’s scary to be asked to pull a piece of fabric out of a bag – sight unseen – and use at least half of it in a quilt (and no fair putting it on the back!) But I put my hand in the bag and prayed I would like it. My prayer was not answered! The fabric was little flower designs in mauve and white – yuk! I tried to trade with others, but no one else wanted it either! I was stuck with it. Other than using it, there weren’t any rules. So, I got out my fabric paint and turned that ugly mauve into all kinds of fun colors.
Once I had fabric that I liked, I cut it into squares and sewed them together for the background. Then I cut out white flowers and leaves (still no mauve) and fused them onto the background. I sewed little pieces of the same painted fabric into the middle of the white flowers and leaves. It turned out bright and cheerful. I just don’t think it would have been as much fun in mauve.
I guess Mick was right. If you try, sometimes, you get what you need.
